Santorini: Tribute to the island with the most famous sunset in the world

Santorini island, known since ancient times as Thira, is one of the top tourist destinations worldwide. Forming part of the Cyclades, its unique beauty attracts locals and international tourists all year round. Its iconic attraction is to simply take a stroll along the rim of the impressive Caldera and watch the mesmerizing golden sunset. A combination of its spectacular landscape, high cliffs and floating islets in the deep blue Aegean beneath with numerous cruise ships, has become an all time favourite spot for weddings and honeymoons.

Santorini's volcano is one of the most important attractions that can be explored with daily boat tours. The visitors can visit Palaia Kameni and Nea Kameni, formed by black lava, as well as the famous hot springs. As a result of the intensive volcanic activity a cluster of islands including Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni have been formed, however before being separated these islands formed of one single island called Strongili, meaning "round" in Greek.

Deep blue waters, red and black sand, vertical cliffs, red and black volcanic pebbles and spectacular rock formation! The volcanic eruptions led to the formation of a wild scenery above and below sea level. The island offers diving lovers an underwater paradise to be explored seeing groupers, lobsters, snails and sponges, though it is mainly the impressive rocks and the lava flows that are worth the visit.

Cave hotels that are built into the cliffside to form a cave are very popular in Santorini, especially in Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani. The caves were actually built to produce and store wine but they have been turned into luxury boutique hotels. They are famous both for their cubic shape and their white-painted color which reflects the sunlight.

The island is famous for wine making and trading and many wineries have been opened up to visitors. In fact, in Santorini is the unique underwater oxygen-free Cellar. Submerged Thalassitis 2011 by GAIA Wines comes from the traditional Assyrtiko variety of Santorini and is the only wine in Greece that is aged under the surface of the sea. 500 bottles of it remained at the bottom of Santorini and matured at a depth of 25 meters for 5 years! Additional varieties of wine the island has to offer are Vinsanto and Nykteri.

Apart from its plethora of beauty and serenity vibes, for the less romantic souls; there are many interactions involved on the island throughout the year, including festivals related to cultural and religious feasts, many historical sightseeings, one of the most popular being Akrotiri, known as the Pompeii of Greece but also more traditional (Megalochori) and medieval (Emporeio) villages to visit. The weather in Santorini is mostly hot in the summer months, dry in the winter months with little rainfalls.
